The Influence of Pashto Culture on the Urdu Ghazals of Ahmad Faraz and Qateel Shifai

Abstract

The interconnectedness between Ahmad Faraz, Qateel Shifai, and Pashtun culture is remarkably deep, historical, and multidimensional. The Pashtun region has long remained an important centre of Persian and Urdu literary activity, where diverse cultural, linguistic, and intellectual traditions have interacted over centuries. This rich cultural background significantly influenced the poetic imagination of both Ahmad Faraz and Qateel Shifai. Through its distinctive ethos, social values, historical consciousness, and geographical environment, Pashtun culture introduced a particular sense of emotional intensity, courage, resistance, dignity, and individuality into their Urdu ghazals. Both poets reinterpreted the traditional themes of love, separation, beauty, suffering, and social injustice through cultural values associated with Pashtunwali. Concepts such as honour (ghairat), bravery, self-respect, loyalty, hospitality, freedom, and attachment to homeland became important dimensions of their poetic expression. These elements not only strengthened the emotional and ideological depth of their poetry but also expanded the thematic boundaries of the Urdu ghazal. Consequently, their poetry reflects a meaningful synthesis of classical Urdu conventions and the distinctive cultural identity of the Pashtun region.
