The tradition of folk literature in the West is a significant part of Western cultural and literary heritage, reflecting the collective beliefs, values, customs, and historical experiences of Western societies. Rooted in oral tradition, it includes myths, legends, fairy tales, folktales, fables, ballads, and proverbs that were later preserved in written form. This study examines the origin, development, major characteristics, and cultural significance of Western folk literature, with particular emphasis on its recurring themes such as heroism, morality, supernatural elements, and the struggle between good and evil. It also highlights the contributions of major folklorists in preserving these narratives and explores the lasting influence of folk literature on modern literature, art, and popular culture. The study concludes that Western folk literature remains a valuable source for understanding the cultural identity, historical consciousness, and literary traditions of Western societies.
